In the mid 1960’s, there were around 1,300 grammar schools attended by a quarter of state pupils.
In 2020, the geographic distribution of the remaining 163 grammar schools in England is very uneven. At a regional level, in 2019 the South East had the highest proportion of state secondary pupils attending grammar schools with 13%, followed by the South West with 7%. The North East is the only region with no grammar schools.
